Praised for his radiant tone, heroic stamina and magnetic stage presence, Mexican-German tenor RODRIGO GARULL has forged an international career in the spinto and dramatic repertoire at venues such as the Teatro alla Scala, the Glyndebourne Festival, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Royal Albert Hall, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Dutch National Opera and the Hamburgische Staatsoper, working with conductors including Charles Dutoit, Ed Gardner, Robin Ticciati, Joana Mallwitz, David Afkham, Oksana Lyniv, Paolo Arrivabeni, Iván López-Reynoso, Axel Kober and Daniel Oren.
Upcoming highlights include his role debut in the title role of Giordano’s Andrea Chénier at the Teatro Municipal de São Paulo alongside Grammy Award-winning soprano Latonia Moore, in the production of Carla Camurati under Roberto Minczuk, his return to the Norwegian National Opera with his acclaimed portrayal of Otello in Georg Zlabinger’s production under Giulio Cilona, Luigi in Vincent Boussard’s new production of Il tabarro at the Oper Leipzig under Ivan Repušić, and Calaf in Turandot at the Operafest Lisboa Oeiras 2026 in August.
With director Christof Loy he has built a particularly productive relationship, encompassing past productions of Turandot at the Theater Basel, Luisa Miller in Oper Köln, Fedora and Francesca da Rimini at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, as well as an upcoming debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid as Rafael in Loy’s new production of El gato montés. With Tobias Kratzer he performed Guido Bardi in A Florentine Tragedy at the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo.
Recent highlights include the Drum Major in Wozzeck under David Afkham at the Auditorio Nacional de España, Cavaradossi in Tosca in productions by Calixto Bieito in Oslo and Vassily Barkhatov in Hannover, his role debut as Manrico in Il trovatore and the Prince in Rusalka in Staatsoper Stuttgart.
His portrayal of Calaf earned him a nomination as Singer of the Year by Opernwelt and the opportunity to perform alongside Anna Netrebko in Wiesbaden. In 2019 he made his debut at La Scala as the Duke in Rigoletto alongside Leo Nucci.
Born in Mexico City, he studied singing at the Mozarteum University Salzburg with KS Helene Schneiderman, and received private coaching from Antonio Carangelo. He continues to work regularly with Chris Merritt. He is a winner of the International Antonín Dvořák Singing Competition and a scholarship holder of the Richard Wagner Society of Würzburg.
